“[Shiro’s] not married yet,” she explained, “but that was the road they were going down until Shiro made the unfortunate decision [to leave]. Well, all right, we go back to plan one and yeah, it just took us a little while to get to the point in the story where we were able to reveal it.

Netflix Just Revealed One of the Main Characters on ‘Voltron’ is Gay — and Fans Went Wild
Is classic cartoon mech Voltron gay? But he was kind of always in the works to be our [gay] representation.
JDS: Stories just get shuffled all the time in the series, so it’s like, that backstory we wanted to tell a story of it earlier, but it just made more sense now.
Was it important for the reveal to be so matter of fact?
JDS: He’s in a relationship, that’s it.
So, when that happened, I turned to the audience because I wanted to see their reaction. Both Keith and Allura remain at Shiro's side, and through flashbacks we learn how Shiro came to mentor Keith, that Shiro suffers from a serious though undisclosed illness, and are introduced to Shiro's partner, Adam.
While at San Deigo Comic-Con, Screen Rant had to opportunity to discuss the news of Shiro being a gay character with Voltron: Legendary Defender's executive producers, Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery.
We don’t really want to kill off our gay representation. It's an especially emotional moment which enables Shiro - the real Shiro - to return from the dead, but as we see in the season 7 premiere, there's no guarantee of success. It was definitely something, that beautiful relationship that had developed over years.”
“You’ll see in that little case with the trophies is a picture of Shiro and Adam,” Montgomery added.
The cast and crew behind the hit Netflix series let fans in on a major LGBTQ reveal, and ComicBook got a chance to speak with the creators a bit more about the much-wanted announcement.
So, be warned!
The news was met with cheers and applause at the convention, and already the revelation that Shiro is gay has swept through the Voltron fandom.
During that panel, it was also revealed that Voltron: Legendary Defender season 7 will premiere August 10th on Netflix. Maybe we’ll find it somewhere else.’ But then we found out pretty soon after that, Shiro wasn’t allowed to die.
There was this one person in the second row who as soon as it dawned on him, he [gasped].”
Sadly, Josh Keaton couldn’t attend the big convention, but he took to Twitter afterwards to address the revelation. It was great,” the actress said.
“It happened like a wave. Since having transplanted his consciousness, Shiro has remained in a coma and it's unclear if he'll ever wake up.
But from a story perspective, it’s not like a big ‘Ooh! Shortly afterwards, Lauren Montgomery said she was blown away by the special reveal.
“It was really that special experience of being with people when they discovered that aspect of his character,” the producer said, referring to the reveal of Shiro’s former lover Adam.
As for Joaquim Dos Santos, the executive producer admitted he was glad to see how accepting the fandom has been of the big reveal.
“It’s interesting because the show has taken on a life of its own online.
“They had been flight partners.”
Executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos added that Adam and Shiro were “the coolest guys in the garrison.”
Fans at the con were ecstatic, and the news spread like wildfire, with “Shiro” trending worldwide on Twitter with more than 50,000 tweets.
Some viewers had already been shipping Shiro in a same-sex relationship with fellow Paladin Keith.
Actor Josh Keaton, who voices Shiro, said he was honored to be part of the groundbreaking storyline.
“I wanted to hang back this morning and let #Shiro’s moment be its own,” Keaton tweeted.
“That being said, I’m overwhelmed by the amazingly positive response, and both honored and proud to be a part of something so important.”
What do you make of this reveal? There are spoilers for the premiere of Voltron‘s seventh season below!
Over on Twitter, Voltron‘s official page confirmed the big news co-executive producer announced as Comic-Con International.
I think that’s the most important thing to take away from it.
LM: It’s a very normal part of his life and it’s just a very normal part of our story. It’s all come to this sort of fever pitch at times, and this being one of those points in time. You can read the full exchange, below:
How long did you both know that Shiro was gay?
Joaquim Dos Santos: A very long time.
Lauren Montgomery: It was something that came up right from the get-go, but as you know, from the beginning we kind of thought we were going to kill Shiro at one point.
And I think we kind of try to envision a world where all of those things are just normal and accepted and people don’t freak out about them.
JDS: We’re happy that it resonates and lands and is important for animation that plays to such a wide audience. The actor, who plays Shiro, sent a big thank you to everyone supporting the Black Paladin as this new piece of his backstory comes to light.
“I wanted to hang back this morning and let Shiro’s moment be its own,” Keaton wrote.
