(Steve and Dustin got me a couple times in this new batch of episodes.) But those moments of genuine feeling are often buried, little blips between hours of mind-numbing, murkily lit action-movie theatrics. Will totally ceded the spotlight to Eleven at one point in the show, but now they’re sharing hero duties, which feels closer to the ideal balance.

Specifically, Vecna didn't just show Will those visions of his loved ones drifting away from him to get under his skin; this was something that he was going to hold over Will's head.

That fear of being outed or being susceptible to Vecna's manipulations pertaining to his identity made Will realize that, in order to be truly ready to face Vecna, he had to make his identity something that Vecna could no longer hold over him.

Thankfully, though, there was no such negative reaction.

Immediately, Joyce reassures Will that he will never lose her, and Jonathan, Lucas, Dustin, Mike, El, and Robin all chime in with the same. But is it necessary for Will to useher exact language when he speaks his truth later? So it definitely hit home.”

Will’s coming out is a big milestone not only in his personal life but also, presumably, in the fight against Vecna.

In response, Will tells Joyce and then Mike that he has something he needs to share, not just with the two of them but with everyone. “They were so respectful and gave me so much space to get into the character, which I really appreciated.

In a moving scene in Episode 7, “The Bridge,” Will comes out as gay in front of all of his friends and family.

“It was so freeing. The show has been building to this moment for a long time. Likewise, Schnapp repeated the lengthy speech several times with the same fervor when the cameras were focused on coverage of everyone else.

“But then, like he says, it takes him through kind of Volume 2 to really understand that it was never about [Mike], it’s about himself. I still feel it.” Schnapp made it easy to admire this poor kid’s bravery in facing some truly fucked-up shit and to ache for him to find peace.

But the show’s handling of Will started to slip early in season three, when he got shifted to a supporting role.
