So when he visits, Terry says he's living with Francine and that Stan is gay.Terry's father, a former star fullback for the Redskins, doesn't know that Terry is gay. Stan even says this is further proof of Terry being gay, and he then demonstrates how a straight guy faints by passing out from the booze he's been drinking.

  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: While having drinks with Greg and Bullock, Stan has no idea what Greg's anecdotes are about, showing that he's the unsophisticated partner that he accused Francine of being.
  • Hard Truth Aesop:
    • Some people don't have a reason to be prejudiced or homophobic, they just choose to be.

      Just like...normal kids.

Jason: We are normal kids, you moron!

    • Panicky Expectant Father: Greg. Said children have thick Nebraskan accents as well.
    • Delayed Reaction: It takes Stan far too long to realize that Al is actually a woman and that she and Lily are lesbians.
    • Failed a Spot Check: Stan does not realize that Francine is pregnant for six months, instead thinking she is intentionally gaining weight to prove a point about Stan loving her for who she is.

He also doesn't consider how keeping up this lie effects Stan, Francine and Greg.

    • Faint in Shock: Stan telling Tank that Terry is gay causes the latter to dramatically faint in his father's arms. Tank retorts that thousands of drunk football fans will literally cheer for anything, ruining Stan's point.

Tank: You think I care what these drunken slobs think?!

As she puts it, even if Stan messed up, he was still trying to help and ultimately, it's better for Terry to let go of Tank after seeing his father absolutely won't let go of his prejudice.

Terry's father is coming for a visit, but doesn't know that his son is gay.

The moment he learns that Terry is gay, he just disowns him out of nowhere, so it's very clear that he's not a character meant to be rooted for.

  • Hypocrite:
    • After Roger explains the dangers of underage drinking, by publicly shaming Steve for dating an ugly girl, he offers to get him some beers to calm down.
    • Francine was livid alongside Greg when Stan drunkenly outed Terry to his father even though she had tried forcing Terry to out himself by locking them in the same room.
    • Tank doesn't approve of pre-marital impregnation, yet he's later revealed to be a notorious womanizer who'll sleep with almost any woman he comes across.
  • I Have No Son!: Upon learning that Terry is homosexual, Tank disowns him right then and there.
  • Irony: Stan made more of an effort to get Tank to accept Terry's sexuality more than Terry did.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Even though Stan has Terry Forced Out of the Closet and destroyed his relationship with his homophobic dad as a result, Francine and Greg ultimately agree that it was for the best after Stan did everything to atone for his mistake, especially since Terry was willing to risk his relationship with Greg for his father's approval.
    • Stan tries to get Tank to accept Terry by saying that if a stadium full of people can accept him if they were told he's gay, then he can accept his son being gay.

So when he visits, Terry says he's living with Francine and that Stan is gay.Terry's father, a former star fullback for the Redskins, doesn't know that Terry is gay. Terry punches him in the face.

      Stan:That wasn't campy at all!

    • "Not So Different" Remark: Stan realizes this when Jason and Mary fight in the car, and he instinctively calls them "Steve and Hayley."

Stan: Wait, you fight just like my kids.

But the fact remains that they lost nine months hiding in the attic in complete fear and paranoia, so in the end, Klaus did get a measure of vengeance.

    • Screaming Birth: Francine giving birth to Liberty Belle.
    • Shout-Out: After Terry describes how surrogate pregnancy works, Stan thinks it's like something out of Star Trek, before asking if it's from Deep Space Nine as he refuses to watch that for multiple unspecified reasons.

Terry delayed the inevitable by lying about Francine being his girlfriend, and Stan's actions were ultimately just him ripping off the band-aid when Terry wouldn't.

  • Hate Sink: Tank makes it very clear that he knows about homosexuality and has never had any upsetting experience to explain his homophobia. (into microphone) I just had a beer fart!
    Crowd: YAAAAAAAAAY!!!

  • Misplaced Retribution: By the very end of the episode, after Tank makes it clear he'll never be okay with Terry's homosexuality, Terry tries to lay into Stan for all of this happening as if it's his fault Tank is a stubborn homophobe.

All throughout Francine's pregnancy, he is extremely nervous about becoming a father, especially when Francine goes into labor.

  • Pyrrhic Victory: Steve and Roger preempt any further revenge from Klaus by placing a stack of books on top of his bowl so that he can't get out. Meanwhile, Roger buys alcohol for Steve and his friends.

    Tropes:

    • Anti-Alcohol Aesop: Steve's subplot has him realize that underage drinking is wrong when he finds out that he kissed a very ugly girl while hammered.
    • Brutal Honesty: Tank bluntly admits he had no inkling of Terry's sexuality, doesn't care if it makes him happy, and knows it's not his choice, but still finds it utterly disgusting.
    • The Casanova: Tank Bates is described as a notorious womanizer who slept with all the cheerleaders, the coach's daughter, and the announcer's wife, shattering their family.
    • Dirty Coward: Terry completely balks when he tries to tell Tank that he's gay, instead claiming Francine is his girlfriend with Libby as their illegitimate child and Greg and Stan are the gay couple across the street.

Legal surrogacy contracts were not approved until 2019.

    • Hope Spot: Hayley plays to Stan's pro-life beliefs by pointing out that being mad at Francine and stressing her out is bad for the baby. Greg and Terry's response is to put on some "rumble" music from West Side Story and engage in a dance-based battle, nimbly avoiding Stan's attacks, and pulling off over-the-top pretend attacks rather than actually attacking him, to his annoyance.

Francine manages to stop Terry, pointing out Stan was the one who tried to help Terry this whole time even if it didn't work.

    • My God, What Have I Done?: Roger sees the error of his ways in regards to buying kids booze when he sees Steve making out with a girl who is... erm... I don't know why I said that.

DS9 actually did have a surrogacy plot line in Season 5.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Stan realizes what's happening when he answers a call from Francine's doctor about her pregnancy, and then relays this info to her.

    "Your doctor called.

He responds by smashing a bottle, only to then come back with a chainsaw, then coming back with a leopard, finally satisfied with a leopard holding the chainsaw.

  • Understatement: After Klaus promises excruciating revenge on Steve and Roger, the two are stunned silent and Steve can only reply "He didn't think it was funny."
  • Verbal Backspace: When Francine and Hayley watch the news report about Stan kidnapping the baby.

Francine: I can't believe your father would do something like this!
    Hayley: I can.
Francine: Yeah, I guess I can too.
