Jarman raged against the renewed tide of state-sanctioned homophobia in the 80s, while the 90s brought us the much-loved Beautiful Thing (1996). Throw in a sun-drenched Yorkshire setting (not the most common pairings, perhaps) and a mildly insane older brother (Paddy Considine), and you’ve got a coming-of-age classic.

Whether you are a fan of period dramas or appreciate compelling storytelling, Carol is a cinematic gem that should not be missed.

As their friendship deepens, Jamie’s supportive mother, Sandra (Linda Henry), and their eccentric neighbor, Leah (Tameka Empson), provide a vibrant backdrop for their burgeoning romance.

The film beautifully captures the essence of working-class life in the United Kingdom, exploring themes of social class, acceptance, and personal growth.

As their connection deepens, they embark on a passionate and forbidden love affair that defies societal norms and threatens the stability of Carol’s personal life.

The film’s impeccable cinematography and attention to detail transport the viewer to a bygone era, capturing the essence of 1950s America and the United Kingdom. Just watch it, alright.

Netflix is now available in more than 190 countries worldwide and each country has a different library and availability. “This was the first time many gay teenagers saw same-sex affection, let alone gay sex,” said political activist and writer Owen Jones in his cracking little anniversary write-up of the show. Young Soul Rebels

Director and video artist Isaac Julien’s 1991 feature Young Soul Rebels – about two Black men navigating race, sexuality and class in 1970s London – has a searing energy which makes it as relevant today as it was a couple decades ago.

Though Young Soul Rebels spreads its focus across a number of different plots (all set in 1970s London), there’s a particularly trailblazing one involving the relationship between a gay punk and a soulboy — the latter being the term used for members of a working-class subculture centred around American soul and funk music. Michell, known for his remarkable directorial skills, has previously helmed acclaimed films like Notting Hill (1999) and Changing Lanes (2002).

The premise? Back in the 1970s, trans characters and storylines were all but invisible, but a few isolated steps forward were taken. Perhaps the most exploitative example of queers being equated with perversion, it makes The Killing of Sister George look progressive.

Girl Stroke Boy (1971)
