Thanksgiving gay

(Opt for one that you will drink the rest of while you are cooking but don’t let it put you to bed before you take the final product out of the oven.)

1 cup whole milk

2 cups heavy cream

2 tsp Dijon mustard (smooth, not whole grain)

3 sprigs thyme

2 bay leaves

2 Tbsp Flour

8 oz block of Gruyère or Comté cheese, shredded (traditionally, this dish doesn’t contain any cheese, but the French also don’t celebrate Thanksgiving..

• 1 (1-pound) sweet potato, with skin

• 1/2 cup butter, softened

• 1 cup white sugar

• 1/2 cup milk

• 2 large eggs

• 1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust

1. Gather the ingredients.

2. Place whole, peeled sweet potato in pot and cover with water; bring to a boil.

   Boil until tender when pierced with a fork, 40 to 50 minutes.

3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Remove sweet potato from the pot and run under cold water. Fight me over it. However, the stunningly grim history behind its origins cannot be overlooked. . Light the good candles. As an out and queer adult who has had to go “no contact” with the majority of my family, Thanksgiving has evolved to being a time to rest and be with chosen family.

   Whatever that looks like (as long as it’s safe). It’s only the main course. Once the meal is over, two people make their wishes and break the wishbone. Getting the gravy right? More time in the oven? Over the years I have made my Aunt’s incredible Pecan Pie and each time it actually tastes like hers which I take as a win because everything she makes is amazing.

   

   Hold someone. One person hosted Thanksgiving at their Unitarian Church for up to 70 people each year, calling the congregation their “adopted family.” Another said they spend the holiday with their boyfriend’s family, who are “1000% more welcoming” than their own.

   Whether you spent Thanksgiving surrounded by chosen or adopted family, curled up with a partner, volunteering for your community, or even scrolling apps between bites of pie, one thing is true: the holiday belongs to you just as much as anyone else.
